Setting sail in Norway means stepping away from the ordinary. Far from the typical sunny and easy sailing destinations, this journey is designed for travellers seeking an intense, wild and deeply immersive experience.
A One-Week Sailing Experience Through the Fjords
Boat: Delphia 33
Travel Date: August 2025 – 1 week sailing and 2 weeks travelling on land
Crew: Baptiste, his wife and their two children
Baptiste has been passionate about sailing since his teenage years. For this experienced sailor, Norway had long been a dream destination. After years of sailing in the Mediterranean, Brittany and the Caribbean, he finally embarked on an extraordinary family adventure with his two children, aged 8 and 10, exploring the Norwegian fjords in the Lofoten Islands.
“We had wanted to go there for a very long time. It was the perfect moment.”
Norway: A Demanding Yet Unforgettable Destination
Chartering a yacht in Norway is not something to organise at the last minute. It is a destination that requires preparation, often more than a year in advance. Boats are limited, and the overall budget is higher than in many other sailing regions, including marinas, accommodation and even food.
However, for those willing to take the leap, the experience is incomparable.
Sailing conditions in Norway are unique: intense cold, constantly changing weather and freezing waters. We sailed the entire time wearing hats, gloves and several layers of clothing. The water temperature was around 8°C, so safety was essential. Every crew member wore an automatic life jacket, movements on board were carefully considered, and vigilance was constant. Yet that level of challenge is also what makes the adventure so special.

Sailing Through the Fjords: A Truly Extraordinary Experience
Sailing in Norway means navigating through spectacular scenery. Instead of islands, the fjords dominate the landscape, with towering cliffs plunging dramatically into the sea and surroundings that often feel almost unreal.
“Some fjords truly amazed me: cliffs rising 1,000 metres high, mist everywhere, 40 metres of depth beneath the boat… it was breathtaking.”
The sailing alternates between narrow passages, channels, sheltered waters and more exposed areas. In some ways, it can resemble sailing in Croatia — but on a much grander and wilder scale. You weave between fjords as you would between islands, except everything here feels larger, more dramatic and more untouched.
This is sailing on the edge of the polar zone. At the end of the trip, I even received an Arctic navigation certificate. Despite occasionally challenging conditions such as wind, fog and even snow, the sailing remains accessible to experienced sailors thanks to reasonable distances between stops and many protected anchorages.

A Complete Immersion in Nature
This type of journey leaves a lasting impression. What makes Norway so unique is the constant connection with nature. The cold, the wind, the rain and sometimes even snowfall while sailing constantly remind you that you are navigating at the gateway to the Arctic.
“Sailing through snow is something you simply do not experience anywhere else.”
The feeling of isolation is equally unforgettable. During the entire week, we encountered only four other boats. We truly felt alone in the world. Some fjords are completely inaccessible by road, making the sea the only way to explore them.
Very few destinations offer such a powerful combination of intensity, solitude and raw beauty.
“There were places where I realised: I could never have experienced this in any other way than by boat.”
Despite the intensity of the experience, Norway also offers quieter and more relaxing moments. Fishing, for example, becomes an essential activity thanks to the incredibly rich waters.

Choosing the Right Yacht and an Experienced Charter Company
Norway is primarily suited to sailors with solid sailing experience and a strong understanding of safety at sea.
“I would not say it is only for racing sailors, but definitely for confident sailors who are used to managing both a boat and a crew.”
Choosing the right charter company and yacht is absolutely essential. For this trip, everything had been carefully prepared to handle local conditions. The yacht we chartered, a Delphia 33, was robust, well insulated, and most importantly, heated — an essential feature in Norway.
“It was 8°C outside, but inside we could comfortably wear jumpers and dry our clothes… that makes all the difference.”
It was also the best yacht handover experience I have ever had when chartering. We felt genuinely supported by the charter company: several hours of briefing, fully equipped onboard facilities and assistance available at any time.

And After Norway?
After such an unforgettable experience, future travel dreams naturally evolve. My next dream destinations lie somewhere between returning to gentler climates and discovering completely new horizons:
👉 Yacht charter in Sweden, to enjoy Nordic sailing again but with milder temperatures
👉 Or a yacht charter in the Seychelles, for a complete contrast
